Does anyone here believe that Christian holidays need to be cleaned up of the pagan influences?

I dont even want to celebrate Easter anymore or Christmas. The Catholic church has made it to mingle in pagan practices. I much prefer Passover and Hannukah over them. Is there anyone else who agrees with me?

You are right and have a good point.

  2. Passover and Hanukkah have pagan roots. Sorry to burst your bubble.

  3. But then there would be no more Holidays, i like my days off

  4. I don’t care about the Pagan influences.
But I’m sick of the shallow commercialism.

  5. Let me guess, you’re a Jehovah’s Witness.

  6. Follows Jesus 02. Jun, 2010 at 1:40 am

no the pagan holidays have nothing to do with easter or christmas

  7. ask the jehovah witnesses.

  8. Well I think that as time is getting closer to Christ’s return, that we really will have to see it getting worse to have certain prophecy fufilled that will be. We can always hold to the true meaning of any of what our faith teaches us is the “real reason” for holidays like Easter or what have you. Good questions. Less focus on the ways of non-believers and more time in the Word will help you feel less fustrated I think too. Sure helps me :)

    Yeah, stop celebrating our holidays!

btw, please don’t celebrate jewish holidays unless you convert to Judaism, especially if you don’t know the reasons behind them,

Christianity was pretty much based off of other religions. Paganism was one of the big ones. If you don’t want Pagan influences in your life your pretty much going to have to become something completely different, like an atheist.

  11. I agree mainly because the Bible condemns participating in anything that is pagan in custom.

  12. I really don’t think it matters in the least, celebrate for the reasons you do. I mean seriously, if you believe god knows and loves you then he must know why you are doing whatever your doing.

Yes the only problem is that the rest of the christian world has not researched this out sufficiently to come to the same conclusions !!!

  14. I would rather continue the old pagan cultural customs than the modern “Hallmark” versions. It’s somehow kind of heartwarming to do some of the ancient leaving apples out for Santa’s reindeer and letting the kiddies hunt for eggs. I just avoid shopping for three months before Christmas, never buy the ornament o’ the year, and never listen to the radio. I love going to church and decorating the house.

  15. In my view, I believe that much of Catholicism is from incorperating pagan ideas to make the conversion of pagan nations easier. They placed Mary to replace the fertility goddess, and they incorporated praying to the Saints to add a polytheistic element. They probably did this to win more converts.

Really, Christians SHOULD observe the jewish holidays. The earliest Christians did.

  16. That will happen when the Catholic Church rests on the seventh day instead of the first.

In other words, that will never happen.

  17. penguinopiumden 02. Jun, 2010 at 6:23 am

I agree, the pagan holidays should be returned to normal and the Christians can make their own holidays instead of ripping every one off. Pagans should sue the Church for custody of their holidays. The Church should also pay holiday support.

  18. Shadowgirl777 02. Jun, 2010 at 7:14 am

Yes. If the Christian community is going to decry other religions, including the ones it subverted holidays from, it should separate itself completely from these awful pagan influences. It’s really rather insulting that the biggest holidays of the year are taken straight from the Celts they left alive when they tore through Scotland & Ireland. These Celts would celebrate as they were told, in addition to the celebrations they were used to, and would not stop. Hence, the thievery. What a slap in the faces of all who were killed because they wouldn’t convert.

  19. “MINGLE” with Pagan practices???
Christian holidays ARE pagan! There is NOT ONE truly Christian holiday. Never has been.

  20. I agree i dont even want to celebrate these over commercialized consumerized holidays, i mean christmas isnt even over and they are already putting the easter chocolates on display its disgusting!

  21. mrsreinstein821 02. Jun, 2010 at 7:42 am

Holidays should be a mix of religious belief and tradition, or just one. If you only feel the religious part of the day is important then you shouldn’t be concerned with what others do but instead teach your family what you feel is most important. You shouldn’t need to put so much emphasis on a few days of the year to symbolize your faith.

On the other hand, if you are non-religious such as I, this does not mean you cannot celebrate traditios of your elders or family. I believe tradition is the true meaning of a holiday and family connection of the day far outweigh outdated religious beliefs that have long since been disproved or at the very least are likely incorrectly dated.

  22. Born Again Pagan Atheist 02. Jun, 2010 at 7:44 am

All religious celebrations have Pagan roots, buddy…

Sorry, but they beat you to it.

  23. I do not agree. I understand your view though. The Church as a whole decided to give their people an outlet to worship God during other holidays. You could say to win the day back to God. Another person I know mentioned that during the persecuted Church you could celebrate God during these times and no one would take notice. But, regardless holidays have little to do with God or pagan practices. It saddens me that Holy days have become just another marketing scam to dump a lot of cash. I grew up with them and I do not feel that I have dishonored God during these festivities. I hope to raise my children in them and always place the focus on God.

Hanukkah is nothing though Passover is a very good holiday. You sound like you wish to become Messianic Jew. That is fine as long as you remember that it does not make you better than a gentile believer.

  24. mesquiteskeetr 02. Jun, 2010 at 8:43 am

I am a Christian and the only holy day I recognize is the Lord’s Day when we come together to break bread (partake of the communion of the bread and wine that represents the death of Jesus).

  25. As a pagan, I think christians should get their own bloody holiday customs and stop stealing and twisting ours.

    GRIN…………

  26. I,m not Catholic and we observe Easter because we honor
    the Resurrection of Christ,
we observe Christmas because it celebrates the Birth of Christ
and as we believe in God and God,s Son Jesus we do this,
your also welcome to observe Passover and Hannukah and
    God bless

  27. I’m up for cleaning up the holidays, but better yet, let’s clean up the christian church of it’s pagan ways first. Eggs for resurrection? A wish list for Christmas? Sermonizing for church?

Let’s focus on getting our act of worship together first, then worry about how we celebrate.

  28. It’s called Synretism, and it happened a long time ago in order to help spread the religion. If you can couch a religion in terms of another person’s culture, than you are more likely to convert them. It’s an old, old phenomenon in the church – it was use to give Christianity more philosophical and intellectual appeal when they incorporated pagan philosophy into it (Plato and Aristotle), and was also used to convert the Germanic tribes and the Roman population over.

For example, the idea of many christmas traditions came from converting druids and germanic tribesman. The day christmas was held on was originally the same day as Saturnalia, which was important to the German populace. Even the explanation of transubstantiation is ripped straight off Aristotle and Plato.

It does help in converting people, but, personally, I think it’s a little bit deceptive. If your religion is the Truth, you don’t need to go around scuffing it up to look cool, you should be able to portray it how it is, be authentic, and then have other people make a decision. It seems a little bit dishonest, like some snake oil hukster, or a used car salesman – to me it seems to cheapen the religion.

  29. While others are caught up in the pagan influences that may or may not be in the holidays; you should not because you know better and can remove them from your own worship of that particular day.

For Easter it’s all about the risen Savior Jesus Christ. He rose to let you know death has no hold over those who believe in Him and like Him, we too will be risen to be with Him. So forget about the Easter eggs and bunnies, that doesn’t fit into the true Easter story.

For Christmas there is no reason not to celebrate it to; no matter what day it is on. God has created everyday! And remember the Christmas night; Holy Angels told the Shepherds to rejoice. So you have the angels celebrating Jesus birth and He wasn’t even born for them. And of course the shepherds went to see and worship the birth of Jesus.

Why should we, who claim to follow Christ in spirit and truth, be left out of any of this.

    Keep the Faith and Celebrate.

  30. Blessed by the Lord 02. Jun, 2010 at 12:01 pm

I’m not sure that is possible. The Romans alone had 260 separate days of religious worship and festivals each year. I would bet every day has some significance to one pagan religion.

    Blessed

  31. BUDDY YOU GOT IT TWISTED.YOU NEED A GOOD EDUCATION IN ASTROTHEOLOGY. RELIGION IS NOTHING BUT SUN WORSHIP EVOLVED. WAKE UP!!!

Rather than being a “Christian” holiday, Easter celebrations date back into remotest antiquity and are found around the world, as the blossoming of spring did not escape the notice of the ancients, who revered this life-renewing time of the year, when winter had passed and the sun was “born again.” The “Pagan” Easter is also the Passover, and Jesus Christ represents not only the sun but also the Passover Lamb ritually sacrificed every year by a number of cultures, including the Egyptians, possibly as early as 4,000 years ago and continuing to this day in some places.

  32. And what is your question? well, is it the Gospel of Thomas……one of those dead books , not in the Bible! Gnostics have a belief in the cosmos.

How influential were Pagans to Christianity and Christ’s Church?
I think that it is important to acknowledge that these attacks are against all Christians and not just Catholics, although they attack Catholicism in particular. Some seem to be suggesting that if it had not been for syncretism between pagan religions and Catholicism that all Christians would be Arians based on the information that some pagan religions had beliefs similar to Christian Trinitarian beliefs therefore the Trinity is wrong and Arius was right. If I was to list all of the pagan religions that believed in oneness as did Arius and his modern day heretical followers, would that prove that Arius was influenced by Pagans and thus heretical for his beliefs and practices? I pray all can see the folly of such arguments. Are we to accept such comparisons which persuade only by their volume those that are ignorant and not on the truthfulness and application of the comparisons but on the gullibility and prejudice of the hearer?

The origin of most of this anti-Catholic propaganda comes from the book written by Alexander Hislop, called “Two Babylons” published in the mid nineteenth century. Another book written by Ralph Woodrow called ”Babylon Mystery Religion” is a revised and modernized version of Hislop’s book. Both of these books are simply lists of similarities of Roman, Babylonian and Egyptian religions to Christianity that these similarities imply descent. Church history makes such comparisons ridiculous but to the uninformed and uneducated in Church history with a predilection to be suspicious of Catholicism these accusations are believed by some. To the knowledgeable the similarities supposed are laughable but even though they are laughable and weak, people are still influenced.

  33. Potter'sClay-Isa 64:8 02. Jun, 2010 at 1:46 pm

Why anyone else.. the Bible is there to agree with you.

Since when did the Christians found it OK to celebrate such holidays – which when examined is sourced out from Heathen practices? Sad to see, Christians who dont pray and are not close to God also try just to make it to such holiday events and celebrations. To enjoy a party in the worldly way, forgoing all the meaning of sanctifaication and Holiness, giving up themselves to self-righteousness and covetousness, to the lusts of this flesh. Partying, smoking, drinking all for the sake of such so-called Christians events.

lot more to say, but unless you are submitted to God and withdraw from such non-Blblical practices, we cannot reach the kingdom of Heaven. Lets get closer to God and be prepared for His Coming.

    God Bless

  34. The celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ has nothing to do with Paganism.

This greatest of Christian holy days has been celebrated for almost 2,000 years and is directly related to the Jewish feast of Passover celebrated for about 1,500 years before Christ. Neither of which is related to or based on Paganism.

The popular observance of Easter has incorporated a couple of pagan symbols of fertility in rabbits and eggs but they have nothing to do with the actual celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

If some Christians want to do away with Easter bunnies and Easter eggs then I have no problem with that but do not throw Jesus Christ out with them.

    With love in Christ.

  35. Catholic @ Heart 02. Jun, 2010 at 2:10 pm

Sorry, but even Jesus celebrated Passover. He had nothing against Holy Days.
If it wasn’t important He wouldn’t have done it.

That’s right, I’m a Catholic…and I will observe Holy Days just like Jesus and the Apostles did.

Passover is mentioned 48 times in the scripture:
    http://www.usccb.org:8765/query.html?col=bible&qt=passover&charset=iso-8859-1
    Look for yourself.

    Leviticus
    Chapter 23
    1
    The LORD said to Moses,
    2
“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: The following are the festivals of the LORD, my feast days, which you shall celebrate with a sacred assembly.
    3
“For six days work may be done; but the seventh day is the sabbath rest, a day for sacred assembly, on which you shall do no work. The sabbath shall belong to the LORD wherever you dwell.
    4
“These, then, are the festivals of the LORD which you shall celebrate at their proper time with a sacred assembly.
    5
The Passover of the LORD falls on the fourteenth day of the first month, at the evening twilight.
    6
The fifteenth day of this month is the LORD’S feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread.
    7
On the first of these days you shall hold a sacred assembly and do no sort of work.
    8
On each of the seven days you shall offer an oblation to the LORD. Then on the seventh day you shall again hold a sacred assembly and do no sort of work.”
    9
    The LORD said to Moses,

    Jesus is the Messiah.

    God Bless.

  36. Nope we’ve been doing just fine with 1800 years of tradition. I see no need for change. Furthermore, Easter is NOT solely pagan. Please refer to Jesus’ death and resurrection matching up to Passover. Thanks

  37. RescuedByTheLamb pray4revival 02. Jun, 2010 at 3:30 pm

I would love to see Easter celebrated as our Lord’s resurrection and Christmas as the date chosen to celebrate His birth.

But people in commerce and non-believers won’t let us as a whole. They are times of money making and degrading our Lord’s work.

Those of us who truly care can celebrate on our own and I think that’s what we should do. We don’t need the approval of anyone else as to what we do in our own homes.

  38. Depends on what your definition of pagan really.

I’ve seen definitions that suggest Hebrew Traditions were also Pagan.

Then if you take the away the “non-Xian” Traditions there really will not be much left..
